PUBLISHED OCTOBER 2022
We are very sorry to say that Alan passed away on September 30th, 2022. We are sending copies of his book, currently at the printers, to his family and have retained a few to sell on with proceeds after costs being donated to charity. Please contact Callender Press. Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in February 2022, almost nothing seems more topical than war. But was it always this way? How ancient is warfare? Indeed, is war part of human nature? Is it linked to aggression in general? And can we ever put an end to it? These are the sort of questions this book will try to answer. The book focuses specifically on three wars, the Napoleonic Wars, the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom and a war in Ukraine fought in the 1850s. But the answer to the questions above depends as much on you the reader, as on the author. How we end war is not an easy question. People in many disciplines, from anthropology to politics and strategic studies, to economics and psychology, to religious studies, and more, have all had a go. The only thing they can all agree on is that it should be ended. The reason the author is writing about it now is that he is concerned with what is happening in the world, and especially with the aggression against Ukraine. Let us hope we can help end that war, and indeed all wars in the future. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alan Barnard is an anthropologist and writer. He is Emeritus Professor of the Anthropology of Southern Africa in the University of Edinburgh. Recent books include The Bushmen (San) of Africa: More Than 40,000 Years of Learning and Hunters and Gatherers: What Can We Learn from Them. He has also written work for children. Alan is a Fellow of the British Academy. Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in February 2022, almost nothing seems more topical than war. But was it always this way?
